BTS Airline Profitability Report: Who's making money and who's not?
I always like to read the US Bureau of Transportation Airline Profitability reports, as they can give great insight to our readers on the safest bets for long term employment. So what does the most recent report say? The great news is that for the second quarter of 2005, the seven largest low-cost carriers each reported a domestic operating profit margin, which is an industry measure of profitability. The not so good news? The network carriers reported another loss.
What is the difference between a Network Carrier and a Low-cost carrier?
Network carriers operate a significant portion of their flights using at least one hub where connections are made for flights on a spoke system. Low-cost carriers are those that the industry generally recognizes as operating under a low-cost business model. Regional carriers provide service from small cities, using primarily regional jets to support the network carriers’ hub and spoke systems. The selected groups in this study consisted of the seven carriers in each group with the highest reported revenue in the most recent 12-month period.
The group of regional carriers reported a domestic operating profit margin of 10.7 percent for the second quarter and the low-cost group generated a 5.3 percent profit margin, while a 2.2 percent loss margin was reported by the seven network carriers. What is domestic operating margin? It is a measure of profit or loss as a percentage of the airline’s total domestic operating revenue.
So which airlines are making money and which are not?
The largest percentage operating loss margins were reported by low-cost carriers ATA Airlines– the airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 26 – Spirit Airlines and network carrier Continental Airlines.
The top operating profit margins were all reported by regional airlines – American Eagle Airlines, Mesa Air Group and SkyWest Airlines.
I hope you find this information useful in your airline job search. Best of luck and have a great November!

What our customers are saying:
"Dear AirlineJOB.net, I just became a PREMIUM member in Septemeber and I can't thank you enough for all the information in the Airline Job Guide, plus all the links I get to the airline jobs. The great, great news is that I got offered a job this morning as a flight attendant with one of the lowcost airlines!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My father is an aircraft mechanic, and he told me about your service, because one of his friends found a job through your company. The Airline Job Guide told me exactly how to apply for the job, and gave me all the information about the airline that I needed to know in the interview to sound like I knew what I was talking about.
Even the interviewer said she was impressed that I knew what the airline's revenues were, and how many employees they had, and where all the flight attendant bases were located. Your guide gave me all that information, and gave me the confidence to go into the interview. There are some questions I just would not have known how to answer, and I am absolutely convinced that I got this job because I got a membership with you and read your book. Thank you sincerely, Joleen, Fort Worth, TX
